Principles of Iyengar Method

Main Principles of Iyengar Yoga method

Alignment and Precision

Placing the body organs, bones, muscles and skin in the correct and precise placement according to each asana character and using them optimally with full awareness.

Space

Creating space in the body by expansion and extension, especially of the spine, chest and limbs. As body and mind are connected the space will be felt in both body and mind.

Sensitivity

Yoga is an inward journey. By concentrating inwardly observing the asana alignment and space, we develop our sensitivity to feel ourselves “from inside” without using the physical sensory organs.

Duration

The ability to stay longer in the pose increase as we mature in the practice and able to be more aligned and peaceful.

Coordination

The inner observation and study of the connection and influence of different body organs on each other, enable us to develop an intelligent coordination of actions to bring about balance and harmony.

Sequence

The methodic approach is to gradually evolve in the practice by sequencing and linking the selected asana of the class, so energy flows without disturbance creating opening, expansion and lightness of body and mind.

Awareness and Self Reflection

By paying full attention to the precision of actions during the asana practice, our chita (consciousness) is spread harmoniously to every cell of our being, bringing the mind, body and ego (“I”) to equanimity and effortlessness state.

Surrender and Love

Each class is always finished with Savasana, letting us completely release, let go and surrender. The body is released, mind is alert and quiet, so we can finally meet out true inner self and connect to the universal lotus heart with gratitude and bliss towards life.
